Golden Tomato Bloody Mary

New Years 2020 is flying in faster than a champagne cork popping off at Aunt Betty's forehead. Sometimes the best hang over helper is a little "hair of the dog". This recipe is still simple to make but probably best prepped a day or two before you wake up feeling like the cat shit in your mouth.

Granted there are a lot of traditional tomato juice, V8 and Bloody Mary pre-mixers on the market and some taste pretty good. If you ever read the label on any of those you'd probably be just as confused as you were when you wake up on the bathroom floor clinging to the toilet seat on New Year's Day. There is so much sodium in one can that could probably preserve a farm animal with it. Making fresh tomato juice is simple, clean and you can add some great health benefits to it very easily.

High sodium tomato juice will jack up your blood pressure and most likely make you hang over headache even worse. Lightly cooking yellow tomatoes and adding some Turmeric powder and Cayenne Pepper will help reduce the inflammation and blood pressure caused by all that partying the night before. I also added a few threads of saffron to really lighted the flavor with some floral goodness.

Recipe

Tomato Juice

4 ea Yellow Tomatoes, heirloom preferable, medium dice

8 oz Vegetable Stock

1/4 tsp Turmeric, Ground

6 ea Saffron Threads (optional but delightful)

1 pinch Cayenne Pepper

1 pinch Sea Salt

What To Do

Using just a tablespoon of avocado oil, lightly cook the tomatoes in a sauce pot over slow, medium heat to help release the juice. Adding 8oz of vegetable broth will help expedite that process, especially if the tomatoes aren't super ripe. Don't cook the tomatoes for very long. Maybe 10 minutes max and keep the simmer low. Cooking it for too long will evaporate the water and your drink will be too thick, we aren't making soup, just a cocktail. Add your turmeric, cayenne and saffron. If you like a spicy bloody marry, you can add more cayenne, but you can also do that as you make the drink so you don't sweat all your friends out who can't handle the heat. Puree the tomatoes in a blender and chill the juice. Staining isn't necessary, especially if you puree it smooth.

The Cocktail

1.5 oz Prairie Organic Vodka

8 oz Yellow Tomato Juice

1 cup Ice Cubes

1/4 oz Vegan Worcestershire Sauce

1/2 tsp Horseradish

1/2 ea Lime, Juiced

1 pinch Celery Seeds

What To Do

In a shaker or directly in a 16oz glass, add all the ingredients and shake or stir. Garnish with celery stalks, skewers with basil, fresh cherry tomatoes and petite fresh mozzarella or just a basil leaf. To get the oils out of the basil, place the leaf in the center of one palm and smack it once with the other hand. This technique works for most herbs, including mint for cocktails. You'll instantly smell the difference
